History
Founder Koichi Kawai, acknowledged as a mechanical genius, worked with his older friend Torakusu Yamaha as Yamaha built his famous music company. In the early 1900’s while working at Yamaha Kawai designed and produced the first Japanese piano action. After Yamaha died Mr. Kawai eventually decided to found his own company and with seven employees produced the first Kawai piano in 1927. The Kawai company is still family owned and run with the current president being Hirotaka Kawai, Koichi’s grandson. Kawai manufactures only pianos and keyboards thus focusing all of the company’s talent and resources on these instruments and has developed the world’s most advanced piano production and research facilities.
Technology
Two things set Kawai pianos apart: tone and mechanical excellence. Many oriental made pianos tend to be very bright sounding sometimes harshly so, but Kawai has made a conscious effort to cultivate a warm, mellow tone in their pianos. Mechanically, Kawai leads the industry in research and innovation. One notable example is their hammer action. Traditionally, these complex mechanisms were made of wood however Kawai pioneered the use of carbon fibre which is used in Kawai’s Millenium III actions which are lighter, stronger, more rigid, self lubricating, more precisely shaped and 30 times less prone to shrinking or swelling with humidity and temperature changes, making the alignment and performance of the action much more stable through the years.
Digital Pianos
Kawai’s digital pianos combine the convenience of a digital with the engineering expertise of one of the world’s best pianos makers. The sounds are recorded from a Kawai concert grand and the action features real wood keys that closely resemble the feel of an acoustic piano action. Kawai’s CP series “ensemble pianos” feature hundreds of sounds and accompaniment styles, microphone input and auto harmonization and a CD player/burner to allow you to record your own audio CD’s.
